The interpretation is sluggish and the recorded sound is way too diffuse for my taste.
Carlos, is that the 80's recording? Karajan recorded the Beethoven cycle in the 60's, 70's and the 80's for DG. DG was struggling with their sound in the early digital era. I like his 60's cycle the best. Ted.

Ted - This Eroica is from the 1970s cycle recorded at the Berliner Philharmonie. The 1960s cycle was recorded at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche which has much better acoustics.

After the introduction of period instrument performance principles from the likes of Norrington, Gardiner, Hogwood, van Immerseel, Savall and Harnoncourt, Karajan et al. sound so old fashioned .

Carlos, what do you mean by "period instrument performance principles"? Ted.

Ted, first of all, very welcome to this thread.
I agree with you: this box is an absolute winner.
A lot of the interpretations in it have become my favourite ones.
It was Tim who made us aware of the real bargain it is.

Smaller ensembles, faster tempo, antiphonal string placement, use of valveless brass instruments, gut strings, use of hard head sticks for the timpani...

The sound signature produced by these "HIP" performers is transparent, fresh, aggressive, illuminating and exciting.

More Telemann...

Telemann:
Overture in E minor TWV 55: e3 for flutes, 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 violins, strings & b.c
Concerto TWV 53: D6 in D major for 2 traversos, violin & cello
Concerto TWV 52:F1 in F major for recorder, bassoon, strings & b.c.
Concerto TWV 53:B2 in B flat major for 2 traversos, oboe & violin
Concerto TWV 54:G1 in G major for 2 traversos & bassoon
Holland Baroque Society, Alexis Kossenka

This SACD contains an overture followed by 4 four-movement concerti all featuring a flute/recorder/traverso. The program is nice enough, but after hearing the amazing Zefiro disc, this one sounds kind plain....
