What World Music Are You Listening To?

Contemporary Jazz. Different! I liked it. Listened on Qobuz, not vinyl.

b. 1959, Rome, Italy. Playing piano from early childhood, Marcotulli studied classical music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory before being drawn to Brazilian music. She also began moving onto the fringes of jazz and established a local reputation at first, before becoming well known among contemporary jazz audiences both at home and abroad.

This was largely due to playing with musicians such as Chet Baker, Richard Galliano, Jon Christensen, Palle Danielsson, Peter Erskine, Steve Grossman, Joe Henderson, Hélène La Barrière, Joe Lovano, Tony Oxley, Michel Portal, Enrico Rava, Michel Bénita, Aldo Romano and Kenny Wheeler.

In 1987 she was nominated for the Best Young Talent award in the Music Jazz Poll and the following year she was a member of Billy Cobham’s band, touring Europe and the USA and appearing on 1989’s Incoming.

She spent some time in Sweden, before returning to Italy in the early 90s. In the late 90s, she played the San Remo festival in duo with Pat Metheny and also appeared as a member of a piano trio, with Paul Bley and John Taylor, at the Olympic Theatre of Vicenza.

No such thing as too much Nordic/Norwegian indulgence as far as I am concerned.

I find myself strangely attracted to the Nordic female singers

The music composition with electronic textures combined with traditional instrumentation is fresh and I find Anja's voice and lyrics engaging.



Definitely not going to be everyone's taste but give it a listen.








Anja Garbarek had no intention of doing something musical with her career, despite having legendary saxophonist Jan Garbarek as her father. Having spent a fair portion of her youth on tour with him, she became enamored with the likes of Kate Bush, Brian Eno, and Laurie Anderson, just some of the artists who populated her dad's record collection.


After performing in a musical during college, the writer brought Anja to the attention of a friend in the record industry who ended up signing her. Attracted to the lack of boundaries that musical expression provides, as opposed to the lack of freedom involved with acting, Anja began her recording career only knowing that she had a lot of searching to do.

While visiting the Nordic part of the world on my morning music journey, this was a nice stop along the way. Swedish Folk music.

Hauntingly engaging.


The EL34’s in Triode mode made for some truly beautiful midrange purity, elevating the warm, sweet and engaging voice of Lena Willemark above the romantic sound of accompanying instruments of fiddle and a half dozen others.

It is a passionate album with deep traditions of folklore and magnificent cultural sounds of Nordic music.



You’ll just have to discover the rest for yourselves.

She surely has a flexible, supple voice.

Djamchid, the father and master, Keyvan and Bijan Chemirani, both sons, form since the end of 1990s the Trio Chemirani, a persian percussions set.

While drawing from persian poetry, they compose and develop modern forms where the accent is put on polyrythmies and on multiplicity of sounds; the Trio reveals to his public the infinite possibilities of the Persian percussions.

The perfect conciseness of the language, vertiginous combined traffic of the dialogue, the infinite variation of the touch with an outstanding complicity, make of this band a scenic and sound recording success.
