Jim... The Sony VW1000ES sounds like a terrific projector in a rather compact and light weight package. As you already know I'm a die hard Sony projector fan, albeit with their CRT G90.

Good to know that you are happy with your Sony projectors. I am guessing that you are happy with their customer support?

Here are a few more comments that the reviewers are saying about this Sony:

"To see such resolution from conventional HD material on a screen this large is simply jaw dropping."

Tom Norton
Home Theater, Feb 2012

"Sony's VPL-VW1000ES projector produced the best 2-D Blu-ray images I've ever seen anywhere on any home theater projection system...

Everything is simply cleaner and less grainy looking. The 1000ES has no pixel structure so there are no gaps between pixels at all."

Doug Blackburn
Widescreen Review, Feb 2012

Jim,
The VW1000ES is an outstanding SXRD (LCOS) projector. As good as your picture looks now, you'll be amazed at the 'pop' and depth you'll get going to a brighter, higher contrast projector. Tom Norton is a trusted reviewer. He's seen a LOT of projectors. I trust his judgement.

He was getting 16ft-lamberts off a 1.3 gain 135" diagonal screen on low lamp, 21 ft lamberts on high. Your larger screen will be 23% dimmer, so you'd get 13 ft-lamberts on low lamp, 17 ft-lamberts on high. That's with a relatively new bulb. So this projector is bright enough on high lamp to meet the SMPTE standard for brightness on your big 150" screen. It is not overkill.

People who say 4k is a waste are missing the point. It's just a number. You have to see this projector on normal Blu-Ray material to understand.

Tom

10 years, over 8000 hours, with 2 projectors; not a single call to customer service.

Tom,

Thanks for some good insight above. I am glad to see some one chime in on the video side as I know this site is more attuned towards the audio.

I agree with you that until you see what it can do with 1080P Blu-ray material you are just missing out on one incredible picture. That is my number one reason that draws me to wanting to buy this projector. If 4K happens then this projector will be ready, but there are no guarantees on that out come. To me it is nice that it has the 4K & 3D feature, but what makes me desire it right now is what it brings to the table in 2D HD format. When they went back and tested it for the 3D review they were getting 26 ft lamberts of light on the 135" screen. So I am expecting a bright, vibrant picture that pops off my screen and immerses me into the scene.

My wife Stacie comes back from Kansas tomorrow and she said she wants to see the Sony in action so I think another visit/demo will be in the cards.

Cheers,

Jim,
What's the status? Did you pull the trigger?

Default New Toys just arrived....

First off the good news.... After being patient, I have finally upgraded my Panasonic AE-4000 projector with the Sony VPL VW-1000ES 4K / 3D. After seeing the picture quality at a local dealer demoed by a Sony rep I was won over. The picture was breath taking and made it an easy decision!
To take advantage of the 3D on the projector I also upgraded my Oppo BDP-83 to the BDP-103.
Also ordered a new MA face plate and 50' of Bluejean HDMI Cable...

And for the little bump in the road. I had the HVAC guy over yesterday to redirect better air flow into my equipment room and HT, and also install a new exhaust fan for the projector box which is hooked up to a temperature probe. Well he used the wrong ducting, which was the metal flex tube that echos the sound to an unbearable level. He will be back on Monday to change it out to a flexible insulated ducting which I have been reassured by the guys at HVAC Quick ducting that it will take the noise away.

So either way, what is a few more days to wait. On Monday I will bring out the power tools and make some modificiations to the projector box that it will work with the new unit, ie new lens hole opening and redesign the rails that the projector will sit on. The exhaust port and the moving of the electric out let in the box is already done.

Wrong material for the ducting...
