Super High-Vision 8K, a new high-resolution television format, has been approved by the UN's communication standards setting agency.

Sharp already have implemented the format. Expect to see more at CES2013.

4K is at a level of diminishing returns. The leap from 1080p is not that huge. Whereas the 8K experience will be totally immersive & will likely kill off 3D.

I wouldn't be expecting either new format to be adopted by free to air broadcasters this decade.

It took Australian broadcasters 10 years to get into 1080i. None of them want to produce their own HD material & they have actually gone backwards by broadcasting local content in SD only. Why...because it costs more money to produce & broadcast HD television commercials, let alone content.

Secondly, the make-up departments simply can't help all of the local celebrity fossils here. The Tracey Grimshaws of Australian television do not scrub up well enough for HD.

Freeview in Australia sucks. The HD sub-channels are primarily limited to US content.
