Cool thread! That long range in the desert would have me hooked if I was near it. Glad to see you guys indulging!

I enjoy target shooting, but I'm not into it like you guys. We have no long distance ranges anywhere around here.

You have at least three 1000yd ranges close to you. Two in MI (Grayling &, &, ........ forgotten the other one, but its there) and at least one in WI.

I don't reload so I miss out on all of your bullet choices, but I have been incredibly satisfied with my results shooting Prime 77gr Match Plus. My gun really prefers it when compared to Hornady or Blacks Hills 75gr Match.

I had a Weatherby 25-06 and still own a Weatherby 30-06 from the mid 1980's. I still remember the day I sighted the 30-06. I was done after 10 rounds due to flinching, although I shot it recently and it didn't seem as bad as I remembered. I have two 6.5 Creedmoors. One weighs in at 17lbs and the other is around 15 lbs so I really don't experience much recoil at all.

Terry, very few of us that have hunted varmints for a long time would ever consider the 30-06 to be a 'varmint cartridge', for the obvious reasons. Today's modern VLD 6mm offerings in shorter bottle neck cartridges are the rage, great BC's , flat shooting and with exceptional range.
While 1000 + yards shots are common west of the Mississippi back here in the East most groundhogs are taken under 500 yards. I was blessed with an alfalfa field that allowed 1000 yard shots when I bagged mine @ 749 yards. |

The 25-05 wasn't bad at all and alot of fun with maybe 25 or less a day but the 30 -06 sure let you know you squeezed a couple off with maybe 10 to 12 a day. The swift got the majority of work done out to the 500 yard mark and beyond is when you decided which 06 you would choose.
For fun we had a couple of 223 Thompson Contenders/ 2x power scopes with Pachmeyer grips using ballistic tips as well. |

Problem with 25cal is the same as the .270cal.......... lack of bullet choices. They both suffer from same as the .223, 6mm, 6.5mm & 7mm have become so popular. Dozens of choices in the later calibers and new cases, as well.

I have two .308's and two 6.5 CM's. I can accurately shoot the targets we have currently, but if the state approves our request to place targets out to 2400 yards I'll be picking up an Accuracy International AXMC chambered in .338 lapua with an additional barrel or two. At least one of those will be chambered in 6mm CM as I would like to try that out at 1000 yds on in.
