Spinning the vintage vinyl tonight!
Schumann
Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor Op. 54
Franck
Variations Symphoniques for Piano and Orchestra
Peter Katin Piano London Symphony Orchestra
Sir Eugene Goossens conducting.
Everest SDBR 3036

This is a very robust vintage audiophile recording mastered on 35 MM wide tape, and it is apparent in the dynamic range available and lack of distortion on loud passages, I find Schumann a fascinating individual, and considering his health problems a wonderful composer presented in very nice fashion here. The Franck piece is a long Piano in front piece that broke the mold when he presented it in March of 1885.

Great piece of vintage audiophile vinyl. IMHO
Regards,
Jim

Kal's right; I have that SACD and it is outstanding. Overall, I'm very impressed with Linn. Carter actually learned a new guitar plucking technique to make this recording.

All on my wish list now!
Want to learn to know this music.
So far, Linn Records hasn't disappointed me either. Usually excellent performances and sonics.

Made in '78 and '80. Horowitz was maybe not so powerful anymore as on his earlier legendary recordings, but his insight in this music had only grown by that time.
Very different from Martha Argerich, but also one of my favs of this concerto.

bart, have you heard the 1930 recording of the Rach 3 with Horowitz? That recording positively crackles with excitement and ... uhh ... crackles. A friend brought it over to my place more than 10 years ago and the performance was unforgettable. I have never been able to locate one since

You are definitely right about the difference between late and early Horowitz. This one:

... shows him in a quiet, contemplative mood - a world away from his firebrand daredevil younger years. It is really quite a touching recording - serene, full of wisdom, satisfied, otherworldly, and ready to accept death on his own terms. Perhaps his tenderness was due to advanced arthritis, or (as I prefer to see it) his insight had grown with age. I wish that I can be like that when I am in the twilight of my life.

I need to hunt down both the 1930 and the 1978 Rach 3 by Horowitz. Got it on my wish list. Thanks for bringing it up!

Hi Amfibius,

I found several CD's and LP's on Amazon, with his early masterpiece.
The Penguin guide gives 1929 as year of recording, with Albert Coates, is it this one you heard?

In the mean time, listening to the "ripe" Horowitz:

Very fine. Quiet. Introspective. Even my little one besides me on the coach playing with her iPad doesn't object...
Indeed, let us hope that we can all grow old in a gentle, wise manner...
