Listening to . . . Tchaikovsky Symphonies No. 4, 5, and 6
Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra - Yevgeny Mravinsky, Conductor Now playing Symphony No. 4 in F minor Op. 36 A three LP Deutsche Grammophon box set Issued in the U.S. by the Carnegie Hall Selection Committee - reminding that Tchaikovsky himself came to New York in 1891 to conduct his music during the opening season of Carnegie Hall. Excellent performances by a stellar Russian orchestra with usual D.G. superior sounding LP's.

Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture
It's now time for some bombastic fun...
Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, Op. 49 Polonaise (from Eugene Onegin, Op. 24) Capriccio Italien, Op. 45 Marche slave, Op. 31 Waltz from Eugene Onegin, Op. 24 Festival Coronation March Cossack Dance (Hopak/Gopak) from Mazeppa Cincinnati Pops Orchestra & Kiev Symphony Chorus, Erich Kunzel This recording sounds amazing and the dynamic range is tremendous. The performances are top-notch to boot. Just be sure to play it not too loud the first time because this disc can easily blow up your speakers. Beyond the 1812, the brass on the Capriccio Italien is sumptuous and a joy to listen to. There are even 6 tracks dedicated to surround speaker setup. Just a fun disc to play. Boy, I miss Telarc.
