Myles.......This is an excellent review written from a listener's point of view rather than a technician's point of view. I enjoyed reading your impressions of the Magic S5.

Miles,

Thanks for your thorough and entertaining review. Its never easy to make a technical analysis informative and entertaining, but you accomplish that with yours. I auditioned the S5 when shopping for speakers, and though I ultimately chose the Q3, the S5 is also an an excellent speaker and it was not an easy choice for me to make! I'm sure you know that the Q3 is also happy when driven with tubes - Magico has shown them with tubes from time to time. Ted.

The decision between Q3's and S5's seems to be very end user dependent. I have discussed this with the local dealer and their customers are about even split between the two. I think you really need good amplification to get the best out of Q3's. whereas the S5's are a bit more amp friendly.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I'd certainly love to hear the Q-series also in my room. On the other hand, the S-series may just fit into my room size perfectly. Or the new M-Project speaker to come. That's certainly promises to be more efficient and uses new drivers and technology.

It's also easier to write about really good and exciting products rather. That said, the S5s were clearly about anything that I've heard in my system over the many years I've been reviewing. And I really did (and continue to) pull all my LPs and tapes off the shelves to hear what no wonders they behold! Especially tape where the speakers really bring the music to life!

Jim,
I've not studied the impedance curves of the two speakers, but based on what I've heard, I'd bet the S5 is more amp friendly! Ted.

By friendly I suppose you mean the S5 is more adaptable to different amps. The sensitivity and impedance curve is actually more gentle with the Q3.
