I listen to Primephonic in addition to Tidal. The only support for Primephonic seems to be Sonos. Sonos hidden in my sysrem feeding a dac seems perfect for me. I can not hear a difference beyond cd quality.

You don't need a dac. You can build/buy something like an intel nuc for ethernet in and USB out. Load it with roon bridge and McIntosh Windows driver. You can then stream from services or a roon core server on your net files up to DSD512 and PCM 192/24. It will also handle MQA from Tidal.

Dac is built into his preamp, C2700. You may get more or better from an external dac, but the built in one is really good.

If you like Sonos then look at a Wired 4 Sound modified Sonos Connect. It gets you a new clock and isolated 24/96 output (even though Sonos is only 16/44.1)

https://wyred4sound.com/products/upg...nnect-modified

One caveat - the Connect went on limited support recently so no new features but mine works great as-is.

But if you like Sonos it is the easiest path to take. Buy it and run a digital coax from it to your C2700.
Done.

Good advice. We are Sonos users - best app and integration around, certainly the most stable. Also a Roon endpoint.
I would suggest the new Sonos Port, however, over the Connect. Updated electronics and DAC (though we use external DAC). Better form factor as well and you should be able to get software updates going forward if you are just starting (the old Connect will work just fine, but updates are over).

I switched over using their trade-up program. Pretty painless. Did not need to ship old unit back.

I’m surprised no one has yet mentioned the Bryston BDA-3.14. You get a darned good streamer in the same box as one hell of a DAC.

If you’re using an external dac just get a Sonos port and call it a day. Great UI.

I have an SotM SMS200Ultra and I'm very happy. It can be quite modular as you can add a dedicated PSU and a UBS regen as well as a network switch in the future.

It can be improved as you have better budget.

Software is really critical for streaming experience.

Sooner or later you will want to try Roon as your streaming software (Tidal included). Roon server can be installed on any PC, so I would recommend to initially chose a streamer that is also a certified Roon endpoint. You can start from the list of compatible streamers published on the Roon Web site, but there are also other models not listed there. Such a streamer will be plugged into the home network and automatically discovered by your Roon server. You can use any Android or iOS device with a screen as your Roon remote (free app) and this in my view could be a major step forward in listening experience.

Alternatively, you can also buy Roon Nucleus (ready made server/streamer solution) or build your own Roon server/streamer (basically, a NUC unit with Roon Linux core) that will stream to your preamp/DAC via a USB cable. This eliminates the ordinary PC from the chain. It works well in my system, but eventually I am looking to further separate the streamer from the server and abandon the USB interface completely. I will keep the NUC Roon server and simply add a Roon endpoint streamer (both plugged separately into the home network via an Ethernet cable).

In all above combinations, the DAC is a separate box. You can experiment with digital inputs to the DAC and use the one that you like (depending on the DAC model, they can differ audibly in my experience).

Hope this helps.
