Wildfire smoke
Up here in the northwest corner of Washington State we‘re caught in an inescapable twilight zone of wildfire smoke. A couple of weeks ago we had smoke coming up from California and Oregon fires. Then the weather shifted from southerly to easterly and we got smoke from fires in eastern Washington. That was followed by weather from the north, and we got blanketed in smoke from British Columbia fires (there are more than 600 fires burning in BC). Then the weather shifted to northwesterly and we got smoke from Vancouver Island fires, and from the west we got smoke from the Olympic Peninsula. We are surrounded. This week our air quality was at various times rated unhealthy for sensitive groups, then unhealthy for everyone, and this Wednesday it was just “Hazardous.” We were advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed - while temperatures were in the high 80s in an area where very few people have air conditioning. For the first time I can recall in 30 years, I see lots of people wearing masks in the street, and our nearest city, Bellingham, has a new nickname - ”Beijingham.”
Thursday afternoon and Friday we finally got a little relief, with the weather coming from the southwest and cooler temperatures, but today it’s getting smokey again. The local weather pundits tell us that this is what we can expect until the end of fire season in October. This is the third year in a row we’ve had bad smoke from fires here - the times they are a-changing for sure. These pictures, taken by a friend, are of Bellingham Bay on a “sunny” afternoon.

Wildfire smoke
Tony, this is so horrible!
The pictures you posted don’t even do justice of what we are experiencing here. There are so many challenges of late no matter where you look on the globe. Side note, I was in Beijing about 5 years ago and the pollution was a little thicker than what we are experiencing now, and it was not coming from burning forests - I remember my eyes just burning from just being there, Last edited by For The Love of Music; 08-25-2018 at 04:02 PM. |

Ouch Tony... that's bad.
Hope you can keep the air healthy in your home. Yes, times they are a-changing. More fires than ever in Europe also. We had 6 weeks without rain here in Belgium, and temperatures up to 100°F, which is extremely high for our country.

Sounds pretty bad , for all of you that are affected by it. Lets hope some rain could bring some sort of relief in the fires, although it would probably have to be substantial rain.

Rain is bringing some relief today, although the air is still a bit smokey. I think if August is going to be like this next year we’ll spend the month on coast of Maine, or maybe the Cape - I always liked Wellfleet when I was young, although I imagine it’s changed a bit in the last 40 years.

These are pictures I took in Glacier National Park, Montana, last Saturday . . . smoke is obviously just as bad there. Roads are closed, fires in several locations in the park. A ranger there told me that it would probably be November before the fires could be contained, and they would not be extinguished until heavy snows cover the ground.
Flying home to Alabama this week, we saw heavy smoke on the ground, all the way to Kansas. The pictures of Bellingham Bay, by the way, are marvelous! Tony, you live in a beautiful part of the world!
