Hey AAers, give me a rank list!
Generally I would agree with your sequence except for power. I would put that below cabling and add room treatments before Power.
I would also state the obvious that there are some strong first order interdependencies among them. Room and Speakers for example - Pre and Power Amp - Power Amp and Speakers. I view the cables as glue between all that allows, within reason, to tune to your ear. So, as was stated, you have to build it with an eye and ear for the overall synergy.

Great replies! So interesting how all of us feel differently about the bottom of the list but the top couple seems to be the same for everyone.

I agree with Gary with a minor change or so.
Room -- Where is everything going ? -- speakers and equipment Power, Power Cables & AC Distribution -- couple 20A dedicated lines and tackle AC issues -- Speakers -- Source(s)-- Speaker Cabling -- Amplifier -- Preamp -- All other cabling -- Isolation/Racks -- Best Sirs, Bob

Great thread. Funny related story. I have a dealer friend who experiments with building his own speakers. Whenever he demostrates them for friends and family he uses a Meridian 808 5 figure ($) CD player. Everyone always says "Wow! What brand of speakers are those?"
You tell me, what's responsible for that magnificent music? : ))) |
