Bob,
My issue with the pads is if something is going to fall on the deck, it will come out of the bottom door, or it will come off one of the shelves that attach to the side of the grill. These pads are usually too small. The pad should be more in front of the grill and further out to the sides to account for things rolling off the shelves. Directly underneath will be cool and doesn't really need any protection.
The kamado style grills are a blast to have. Very versatile.

Tim - thanks for the hairdryer tip - works great. At 7500’ I can get the egg to about 600 degrees F. I have fired several pizzas at 500 to 550 that turned out great - still experimenting.....

Tom,
For longer smoking, buy a roughly one quart (maybe 4-5 inches in diameter) lodge dutch oven and drill 3 holes, each 3/8 inch diameter in the bottom of the dutch oven. Place the chunks of wood inside the pot, place the pot in the egg and heap the charcoal around the pot. This will release gentle smoke continuously for the first several hours of your cook. When all is said and done, you will have charcoal inside the pot to use for the next cook. It is a great way to smoke and worth the time and effort.
