Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto - Symphony no. 5 - The Hebrides
Freiburger Barockorchester, Pablo Heras-Casado Isabelle Faust, violin Qobuz 24/96 We're just back from Bruges where we saw Collegium Vocale, directed by Philippe Herreweghe. This ensemble celebrates its 50th birthday! A programme with motets from Mendelssohn. This in the Bach weekend, the 10th organised in Brugge. Because Mendelssohn was instrumental (pun intended) in reviving Bach, and also because he composed religious music inspired by the great master, this cooncert fitted perfectly in a Bach weekend. These motets are wonderful pieces, seldom played and recorded. Herreweghe admitted they were new for him too. I'm going to examine these on Qobuz, but a quick first search was fruitless. So I played this wonderful album, also with a baroque orchestra that plays Mendelssohn. You can hear this, and it is a nice flavour.

Gryphon Trio - Great Piano Trios / Grands Trios Avec Piano
via Qobuz A cool 9 hours of music. Canada's foremost piano trio, the Gryphon Trio, has a reputation for offering richly detailed performances and excellent ensemble work. This nine-disc set represents not only much of their best work, but also much of the best of the piano trio repertoire. There are six of Mozart's trios; all of Schubert's and Shostakovich's works in the genre; and highlights of Beethoven's, including the three Op. 1 trios, the Archduke and the Ghost trios, and the Op. 11 trio originally for clarinet, cello, and piano. The only noticeable omissions are the Haydn Gypsy Trio and the Dvorák Dumky Trio. Regardless, the selections and these particular performances should not disappoint anyone looking for the most popular pieces of the genre in one set.

Recording of the week last week (Presto Classical):
Charpentier - Orphée Aux Enfers Vox Luminis A Nocte Temporis, Lionel Meunier Reinoud Van Mechelen Qobuz 24/96 While I'm not a great fan of Charpentier - often too bombastic - this is enjoyable. Van Mechelen is outstanding. Very beautiful haut-contre voice. The Orpheus myth was as important for the birth of opera in France as it had been in Italy. In 1684, Charpentier composed a work for three voices, Orphée descendant aux Enfers. With this piece, remarkable for its style and concision, he showed how well he had assimilated Carissimi’s art. It is a dramatic scene, similar to the ‘sacred histories’ of the Roman master. The text, by an unknown author, narrates Orpheus’ quest for his beloved in the Underworld. The hero’s haute-contre gives him an elegiac timbre – this was the vocal register in which Charpentier, himself a singer, excelled. In 1687 he created his second illustration of the myth, La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers. In its two acts can be discerned the outline of a possible complete opera – the manuscript has reached us shorn of the third act in which Orpheus would presumably have lost Eurydice before being devoured by the Maenads. While La Descente d’Orphée has already been recorded several times, the Orphée of 1684 is a rarity and a magnificent discovery. In these two roles that might have been written for him, Reinoud van Mechelen is at the peak of his artistry, while his ensemble A Nocte Temporis and Lionel Meunier’s group Vox Luminis blend in perfect symbiosis. © Alpha Classics
