What setting should i use?
I am using the confidence c2 speakers with a bryston preamp and amp. Should I use the large or small speaker setting? I am also using a 15" velodyne subwoofer which has its own built in amp.

-- Deja vu. ...Small, with an approximate crossover at 60 Hz or so (experiment).

Ollie.......You did mean to say Bryston preamp and not Bryston processor, correct?

the c2s can do quite a bit on their own. it would be good if you had a way to measure your in-room frequency response and see what the sub and speakers are doing in your room. my focus 160s are crossed over at 55hz on my integra, which feeds my naim nait 5i which is used as a power amp when watching tv or movies. I would believe you could go as low as 40 hz or even full range, but you might find a higher crossover that works better, depending on your rooms interaction and your listening volume/habits. If you dont have something like OMNI Mic, then you can use your ears to set it the way it sounds best to you.
personally if i crossover the 160s too high they sound thin in the mid-bass, and I cant stand that.

-- Hi Callas; I like your post above.
Here's my way of thinking: If your speakers measure flat down to 20 Hz, use a 40 Hz crossover. If they measure flat down to 30 Hz, select 60 Hz as your crossover. ...Flat to 40 Hz => X-over of 80 Hz. Steve, isn't it? Cheers, Bob |

-- So then you need the measurements to confirm.

well, theres no real way to know if you have a null(dip in the FR) unless you can see a graph of your Frequency Response in your room from each speaker group. You would hate to crossover at 60 hz only to know that you L/R speakers have a dip at that range of 6 dbs, and neither your sub or your speakers are playing those frequencies well. Even myself trusting Audyssey on my Integra can be making that mistake. Calibration software is good, but unless you use the Anthem MRX series AVRs or Anthem Pre-pro, other then buying a 3rd party measurement software, such as Omni Mic, or download REW from Home Theater Shack, etc, etc, you wont be able to see what is happening within your room in terms of the FR.
Basically, Audyssey, MCCAC, YAPO and other AVR calibration softwares require blind faith that we are crossing over at the right frequency. I know that Im guilty of this.
