Default No Speed Limits? California Considering “Unlimited” Lanes on Two Highways

`

https://www.automobilemag.com/news/c...CD6D78642C17A2

I can't imagine this becoming law these days even in a Plains State.

I admit I rapidly skimmed through it to see if it spoke to the following (if it did, I missed it):

If by some miracle it did, a lot of people would die because I don't think for a second that US drivers, in general, have the discipline required that German drivers apparently have.

I know it, legislators must know it.

My first, very brief, thought that a greatly increased, but not unlimited speed limit might have a better chance, but still...

It would be chaos, Nein?

California, that pretty much says it all. I mean, smoking a joint, talking on the cellphone, and doing 110 mph........what could possible go wrong? .

The speed limits in the United States are barbarically slow.

They need to be increased. With everybody moving faster on limited access lanes, there won't be slowpokes annoying other drivers who perform crazy dangerous maneuvers to get around them.

The article says the two unlimited lanes would be kept separate from others. I am not familiar with California highways, is the stretch from Stockton to Bakersfield a congested route? If it they are, limited or unlimited hardly makes a difference. If they are not, well, let them have at it. I recall the Montana "reasonable and prudent" speed limit didn't last long...

Reasonable and prudent lasted around 5 or 6 years here. It was challenged at the Montana Supreme Court as being vague. Some pinhead was doing 120 mph and argued this both reasonable and prudent. The reasonable and prudent came about as a result of the 1994 US Congress lifting the mandated 55mph speed limit. Before that, the police would hand out conservation fines of $5 for anything under about 90mph. Currently our speed limit is 80mph on the interstate, 70mph on two lanes. Although we are a rural state (around 4 times the size of Michigan or Ohio) and until recently less than 1 million people, our large critters can wreak havoc. I have a friend that hit a moose, and when the tow truck operator came to retreive the car off Hwy 200, he was in total disbelief that the driver could survive. So some limits do seem reasonable.

The other problem that I recall reading about was that every yahoo that could reach Montana in his sports car did as the law indeed was vague and the fines more than fair for turning the highway into your personal race track.

Slow moving vehicles traveling on left lane are the cause of many accidents.
There is no discipline here in terms on using left lane to pass like in Europe for example.
Maybe they can do limited access, toll, high speed limit lanes. That might work.

Even though it is a rule that is clearly stated on many highways and in the driver's manual. "Use left lane to pass only". Nope, for most people the road rules are irrelevant and putting on makeup or texting while driving 70 is also perfectly normal routine.
