Austin lost a great singer/drummer/songwriter
Doyle Bramhall Sr. died yesterday, a devastating loss here in the Austin music scene. I don't expect many of you to know who he was, so I'll give a little history. A native of Dallas, he got his start with Jimmie Vaughan in the Chessmen. He moved to Austin and he and peers such as the Vaughan brothers, Paul Ray and Denny Freeman helped establish Austin's reputation as a blues mecca. Stevie Ray Vaughan played in Bramhall's band the Nightcrawlers (where I first saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play). Doyle also wrote some songs that Stevie Ray Vaughan recorded including, "Dirty Pool", "The House is Rockin' ", "Looking Out the Window" and "Life by the Drop". He released three CDs, which I recommend. I also recommend his son's (Doyle Bramhall II) CDs. Doyle II played guitar on Eric Clapton's and JJ Cale's "Road To Escondido" album and is a great guitarist.
