Default McIntosh MPI 4

Greetings!

Was looking at E-Bay this morning and came across an interesting McIntosh product from the early 70's, the McIntosh MPI 4 (Maximum Performance Indicator). Does anyone out there know how this was used? Just curious.

I own one.

It was/is used as an FM tuner signal strength/multipath meter, power amplifier watt meter, balance meter/lissajous stereo display and dual trace oscilloscope. It was of greater value in the past than now, although it is cool to look at now.

Components now have better channel balance and tuning than in the past, so it really is kind of obsolete, although it can be used for simple trouble shooting of inter channel discrepancies.

See it in the photo of my system near the top of the stack in my signature below.

Here you go Henry...from the owner's manual:

"The MPI-4 is a laboratory grade instrument. It provides the facility to continuously monitor the quality of the performance of a stereo system. The MPI-4 can sample and display signals from the tuner, preamplifier, and power amplifier without reconnecting cables. Signals are displayed on an oscilloscope screen calibrated with scales for tuning, measuring and testing."

There were also two earlier models, the MPI 2 the MPI 3 which were more basic.

MPI 4 was made from 1973 to 1977.

Obsolete or not, it is still a very cool piece. I wouldn't mind having one.

How can the MPI4 be used to set up a turntable azimuth, anti-skate, etc?
