Default Electric bill with Krell Evo 900e

A very good friend of mine wants to purchase a pair of Krell Evo 900e to drive his Focal Utopias, but wants to make sure he won't be working for the Electric Company of the Dominican Republic.

So, if he plays his system for an average of 2 hours a day, how much could he be spending in electricity in a 30 days period?

Thanks in advance.

I went from a pair of krell fpb 750 mcx's which suck gobs of power all the time to a pair of krell evo 600e's which use 2 watts in standby and my electric bill has gone down by ~ $100/month. Both pairs ran equally warm when playing music fwiw. I can't answer your question about how much running that pair of amps costs in electricity per month but it's certainly de minimis compared with the price of the 900e's. The important distinction is making sure your friend is buying evo 900e's as opposed to evo 900's if he is concerned with electric costs due to consumption in standby.

I would not be concerned about two hours use a day. However if you plan to leave it on 24/7 I would check the manual for its idle current, consumption.

Carlos......What is the household voltage in the Dominican Republic?

One thing is certain, a pair of Krell Evo 900e amplifiers will power ANYTHING, but they will each need dedicated circuits. At idle the 900e draw 650 watts from the wall (5.42 amps @ 120V). At full rated output the 900e will draw 5000 watts from the wall (41.67 amps @ 120V). That would require a 50 amp dedicated circuit for each amplifier.

Just guessing about the actual utility cost, but averaging 4kWH consumption at moderate listening levels he will use 8kWH of power per day listening two hours daily. If the utility cost is 15 cents per kWh he will be spending $1.20 per day or $36.00 on average per month. Of course if he is cranking the Evo 900e's continuously, or listening for longer periods of time the cost will rise proportionately.

Excellent, Dan. Thank you.

Here in the Dominican Republic we use 120v. I'm in charge of the installation of the project. I will run 4 separates lines: 2 Amps, Sources, Subs.

And believe it or not, we pay the highest electric Kwh in the world: US$ .40 cents.

Carlos.......Holy mackerel, $0.40 per KWh. I thought my $0.11 per KWh was high.

Considering the high amperage circuit requirements for 120 volt circuits, it might be more advantageous to operate the Krell Evo 900e amps at 240 volts. It would be much easier to install two 30 amp 240 volt circuits for the amps. That would reduce wire size to #10 gauge in the wall and for the amplifier's power cables.

Nelson.......Well, there goes my low cost retirement in the Dominican Republic. I have my stereo on 12 to 15 hours per day everyday and Marlene has the big widescreen TV on about 8 hours a day. The power company would bankrupt me.
