This was not just a gift for Pete, but a gift for all of us. It is an honor to be a member of this family.

Vintage Pete:

I just installed the same DAC (also in Black), also tonight. :-) Should be fun to hear it open up together.

I could not have said this any better Howard.....very, very well put.

Thank you all, for all that you have done and for all that you are.

Reg....I can't thank you enough. I'm still in a state of disbelief, really.

Okay, the DAC has been set up successfully, and as we say "right out of the box" is sounding superb. (In this case, Reg tells me he had the unit for perhaps a year...I didn't think the ESS 32 bit sabre DAC had been out even a year yet, but maybe it has....and I don't know exactly how many hours Reg had on the unit. But I'll assume he had sufficient hours on it to consider it broken in. WFS recommends 200 hours, I believe.) Anyway, back to my initial impressions. If listened to several tracks, and in each case, I know I am in a different realm of CD reproduction entirely. The presentation is much more relaxed, a great soundstage with great dimensionalism, and just the right amount of "air" around voices and instruments, as one reviewer noted. Not a trace of edginess or fatigue whatsoever. Obviously, I haven't had enough time to fully evaluate its sonic character, but right off the bat I can say this is a superb DAC. Its presentation reminded me immediately of Dan's MCD500 he brought over for an afternoon toward the end of last year....and yes, perhaps a bit better, though again I've not had enough time with either unit to make a fair comparison. It's late tonight, so I can't really do any higher volume listening until tomorrow.

Ivan...thank you so much for your generous offer to assist in the area of cabling. As to my hookup, I had an extra 3 meter coaxial interconnect (Audioquest Diamondback) that I was able to use for the digital hookup, and the unbalanced interconnects I previously used for the analog outs from my MCD7009 were of sufficient length (2 meter) to reach from the DAC-2's analog outputs to the C40 preamp. While a balanced pair of IC's would be nice here, I'm not sweating it by any means. I'm up and running, that's all that matters right now!

I really don't know what digital connection is optimum. I haven't played around with the menus at all, it displays 44K on the readout, and I'm running it in the fixed output mode.

I've attached a couple of photos just to show the general arrangement of the new DAC. These are not my best pictures, folks...taken with a flash and no tripod.

I think I may be up all night again tonight!!

Pete

Pete: Try this -- https://www.hdtracks.com/index.php?f...D0090368034564

I'm in awe of what my new W4S DAC-2 is doing to this album right out of the box.
