Congratulations Audioguy! Your room looks beautiful. I love the burnt orange walls & period looking cabinets, yet it still looks modern. I love the sound of the Avalons which sound wonderfully natural and coherent & throw a wide, accurate sound stage. I've heard the Avalon Transcendent's which impressed me, so the Eidolons should be better still. Great job

Buck,

Beautiful room, beautiful sound system. You have made for yourself a very tasteful, very elegant and very comfortable listening environment.

Looks like the inside of a British men's club - Wonderful place to listen to music and, no doubt, very wife pleasing. So inviting, so welcoming, so very beautiful. The extensive use of live plants is a real plus to your decor, and I've never seen Eidiolons set-up in a more refined setting. (especially my own pair which sound great but never have looked so good in place as do yours).

I've never hooked my Eidolons up to McIntosh gear ( I use Spectral with mine) How do you assess the sound with the 402's?

I'm not going to show the pictures of your room to my wife. She would probably begin immediately to buy new shutters, cabinetry, rugs, sofas etc., trying to change my listening area to something as pleasing as yours.

Congratulations on a job well done!

Julian

I'm lucky to live only about 20 minutes from him and let me tell you how great of an improvement he made. I've seen some amazing systems here on this forum, anyone who has never looked into this should really consider it. I spent tons of time trying to achieve the best room setup possible myself, but having it done by someone with his experience has proved to be amazing. His attention to detail was also second to none.
Jim Smith is a genius. He used to own a (really good) "stereo store" in Birmingham, AL. and came to my Alabama house a couple of times to set up stuff I had bought. On one occasion, he spent about two hours fiddling with a new cartridge I'd bought from him - to get it "just right". Nice person and a real perfectionist.

Thanks Julian......I think they pair up really well, but honestly, I've never heard them with any other amplifier, so my observations may not mean a whole lot. I'm not a very loud listener, so power definitely isn't an issue, they sound very warm and smooth, not at all bright or hard which I've heard some say is an attribute of ceramic drivers. One of the reasons I looked into Avalon is b/c I always read the the McIntosh 402 was slightly on the warmer side which may balance out some of the Avalon's "truthfulness". Anyway, since Jim has been to the house and spent over 8 hours doing his thing, I can safely say that I probably couldn't get it to sound better without doing some very expensive upgrades or perhaps a different type of speaker like a planar. I've always been drawn to the Magnepan sound, but I don't think they would've worked in my room (looks wise that is). Jim was very pleased with what he heard and he said that he's voiced many systems with Avalons.
