I don't think any hi end cable company wants to sell the hi end umbilical cords as there are several type of circular connectors. ARC, VTL, Pass Labs...they are using different type of connectors on their umbilical cord.
ARC is using 14 pole male circular connector which carries 14 wires (18 awg). You can calculate the cost of 1 umbilical cord if you want to use hi end cable. Today Hi end power cord uses only 3 wires and the selling price is from $300-$5,000. So, Hi end umbilical cord uses 14 wires price will be $1,400-$23,000. 2 hi end umbilical cords for your ARC ...how much? My good friend who is working for hi end cable company helps me making the first pair of umbilical cords used upocc copper and I got a very good result. So, I decided to go further with a better wire (the silver wires) and It gave me a better sound. It sounds so good everyday. Again, replace your stock umbilical by the better or hi end umbilical cord will give you the same result as you change the stock power cord to the hi end power cord. |

@JPW, I liked your triangle explanation, that is correct and easy to understand. Great. And sonics from looms of cables involved can sometimes move sonic out of triangle lines in either sides. So cable matching can help make SS sound veer toward tube side too. @Nat, so the special umbilical cords are not available to anyone else. Then we have to forget it. As I understand they are to carry DC current only, so to make good one is to use the least resistant wires and connectors as possible. And also good shielding. Should be less complex to design and built than interconnect that carries low level complex music signal. Toga

Yes..TOGA. I did cut the stock umbilical cords to see the material and search the p/n I got on the wire, I found out that it was just a cheap industrial wire.
So, I strongly recommend anyone using the stock umbilical cords trying to get help from your favorite cable manufacturer to make special umbilical cords for you. |

Toga,
ARC preamplfiers match particularly well with a broad range of amplifiers - I have used my REF40 with many brands of SS and tube equipment with great success. Most probably if you swap the preamplifier for SS you will find soon that swapping the power amplifier for the same brand as the preamplifier is the next step. If you like your current REF40 and Mephisto, my advice is simple - keep both! Last edited by microstrip; 01-17-2014 at 03:03 PM. |
