I keep jonesing for an Orchard, but I can't imagine what I would do with it. I've got about 900 CDs ripped into FLAC files, but I've probably listened to about a dozen of them since going thru the effort to rip last winter. On the bright side, I sent my Stax UA-7CF TA off to be rewired with Nordost Valhalla silver. Hope to have it back into the system the week after Thxgvg. If I ever get serious about digital, the Orchard will be at the top of my list. If MHDT was using one of the original chips I would probably put one "on my shelf". But, as it is using a more-or-less current R-series, they won't run out, so no hurry.

Here is a good thread on the Orchard with more info than you ever wanted to know on the various versions of the R2-R chipset they use (and various other iterations):
https://pinkfishmedia.net/forum/thre...ng-dac.219436/ My thinking is member decooney has it about right.

The ANK 4.1 also looks nice. ANK now offers a 4.1x, 5.1 & uber chic 6.1 if one wants to go 'up-scale' from the very nice 4.1. I sure wish ANK had a better website. The info is very difficult to dig out.

FloridaBoy,
What are your thoughts now between the Orchid and the Abbas?
Thanks,
Markus

I still have both of them. They are similar yet a bit different. I prefer NOS DAC's and they are not common. That's why I bought both. Which DAC are you using now?

With the XLRs that must be the balanced Pagoda. Also uses a different chipset than does the Orchid, with four (4) PCM1704 DAC chips vs. the Orchid's TDA1541A chipset.

Floridaboy,
I'm using a Cambridge audio dacmagic 100. I think it's one of the oldest dacmagic units. Sounds great but I know there's much better sound out there.
FWIW I tried a mytek Brooklyn DAC +. I found it extremely educational for me mainly because I didn't want to listen to it. But it was extremely detailed. Think trebly.

Markus,
Reading a few of your posts here and the other tube thread, If one were to guess, are you streaming looking to get rid of some of the digital edge?

If so, and you are looking at the Orchid or the Abbas, reflecting back a year ago I have progressed by collaborating with FloridaBoy simply trying different tubes, caps, and interconnects with the DAC and sharing test results back and forth towards "getting there". The tubes, caps, cables for the DAC really do help make a notable difference to fine tune things with the MHDT Orchid, etc. It's more enjoyable to listen to streamed Lossless content now, and so much so I really don't mess with CDs or vinyl any more, fwiw.

...

There you go, that would certainly help smooth out digital harshness and glare!
