Storing vinyl
Hello all
I am contemplating diving into the analog side later this year. My room is a bonus room upstairs with its own ac unit. I normally don't turn on the ac until I want to use the room. Over the summer, the room gets to 95 degrees. Turning on ac will easily bring it down in 15-20 minutes. My question is whether records can stand that heat through the day. I may need to store the vinyl elsewhere it's too it. Thanks Pete |

95 degrees would be too hot to store them I would think, especially over a long period of time. Ideally it would be at standard room temperature ranges....too much heat and humidity would most likely lead to some warped records.

My general rule of thumb:
If I'm not comfortable, neither is my vinyl.

That's kind of what I was guessing. I'll store them outside the room where it's more comfortable. Thank you for your speedy replies. Pete

When I was a poor student in the 80s I didn't have AC and I had 2K+ records sitting on shelves in the hot St. Louis summers of 95º and worse for several years. That didn't ever cause any of my records to warp, and I still have them all. You need to get quite a bit hotter and/or in direct sunlight before worrying about it.

I wouldn't choose or advise to store 1000s of records in the high heat and high humidity of a St. Louis summer, but in the end doing so had zero ill effects on my collection all through 4 years of undrgraduate and a few years of graduate school.
Over the last two years I ran my entire collection through an RCM and found zero records or sleeves damaged from either high heat or high humidity. I recommend AC, but my point is vinyl is more durable than you might think. I know that from real experience.

I have stored records off and on for over 30 years in both fairly warm and cold storage lockers. The records were always stored in proper boxes, packed upright and tightly packed. Never had any problems. Regardless of temperature never store your records laying flat in a stack.
