Hi Guys, my name is Giuseppe and this is my first post. I am from Italy so please apology for my english.
I was reading this quite old topic because I am interested to W4S DACs. My doubt is: DAC-1 or DAC-2? Premising that I am not interested to USB capacity, remote, pre amp function, what I would like to know, what are differences sonically speaking? DAC-2 have "Super-caps", do they make a relevant sonic differences?
Thanks for all of you guy that will answer to my questions.
Giuseppe

Giuseppe....Sorry I didn't chime in sooner; I would say that sonically there may be little, if any difference between the two models. However, you may wish to consider the DAC-2 over the DAC-1 just the same. I realize that you aren't concerned with the idea of using the DAC as a standalone preamp, (I have a main system preamp so this doesn't concern me either) but you may wish to utilize the DAC-2's digital volume control, as I do. I have found that the output level of the DAC-2 is quite strong-really too strong in my case-and so I temper this a bit by setting the volume level at 65 rather than the maximum level setting of 70. The output level is very strong especially if using balanced interconnects.

If you have the extra coin, my recommendation would be to go with the DAC-2. You might as well have all the features that are available with this fine DAC, than shortchange yourself and possibly regret it later.

And oh, yes! Welcome to Audio Aficionado!

Pete

Pete,

I've read that the guys at Wyred tested the DAC2 in regards to the output levels and found that the "60" setting offers the lowest distortion. I too find that the output is quite strong and keep mine at 62.

Just an fyi...

Hey Doug.....thanks for the tip. I may just try it. Some are reluctant to apply a digital volume control, lest we lose data. But I found that backing off from the maximum setting inproved the overall sound. (At the maximum setting I was actually experiencing leakage in my McIntosh C40 volume control-the input signal was that strong).

I may just try the 60 setting, as 65 is even stronger than it needs to be.

Thanks!

Pete
