I haven't had much over the years, below are the mains I have/had. I still own everything though The Technics were purchased at the end of 2000 at which point they were boxed up in the summer of 2002 and replaced with Paradigms. The Paradigms remained until the Spring of 2011 when they were replaced with the B&W's. I moved the Paradigms to the surrounds. They will finally be boxed up next week as I make way for another set of B&W's. The current B&W's will replace the Paradigms as surrounds.

My first "good" pair of speakers was back in 1989 and was the Klipsch Korner Horn in oiled walnut. I was in a "hi-fi" store when I first saw/heard them and was awestruck with how big and dynamic a sound they projected. I'm a musician playing both the tenor and bass trombone in jazz venues and the cello in classical. Boy oh boy did these monstrous K-Horns reproduce the sound of trombones, trumpets, etc. I just knew I had to have these, but there was no way my wife would have agreed if I had showed them to her first. So late at night while "pillow talking" in bed I said that I had found a pair of speakers that sounded sooo much like my horns when playing live that I'd really like to get them....what do you think? She said to get them. Well, two days later I had them delivered to my home while she was at work. You should have seen the look on her face when she came home and saw these behemoths! It was priceless. These were wonderful paired with a custom EL84 tube amp. Had them for about six years. As much as I liked what the big K-horns did, I eventually grew tired of their "cupped" coloration on voices.
My second pair of "good" speakers were the ProAc Response 2's in Rosewood on target stands. These had great voice and timbre and a really nice sound. Again, easy to drive with tubes and very enjoyable, but just not enough bass to make them balanced for me. I was never able to like a sub with them and preferred listening to them on their own. I had these for two years. They now reside with my brother and he still enjoys them to this day. My next set of speakers I consider to be "great" and these I still currently use in my reference system. They are the Dunlavy SCIV Signatures. They are the most balanced speakers I've ever had and do nothing wrong in my opinion. I love them to death and can't ever imagine parting with them. My next pair of speakers were a 1960's vintage pair of 12" Tannoy Monitor Golds mounted in custom cabinets. Very dynamic, full sound. Easy to drive with tubes again, but they had a certain hardness or shrillness at a certain frequency that grew tiring to me and off they went. I also have a pair of late 1960's Wharfedale W25's bookshelf speakers in my bedroom system that are a sealed box design with an 8" woofer. Classic English sound that is great with voice, violin and cello sonatas, guitar, etc. I've had these for several years and don't plan on getting rid of these either. So I still have the Dunlavys in my main system and the Wharfies in m bedroom. I'm thinking about getting some Harbeth's for my den. |
