On the way home from a business trip, I stopped in at my Rolex Dealer yesterday just for kicks. Boy am I glad I did!

I was talking to store manager and I mentioned that although Iíve seen both the Sea-Dweller and its bigger brother, the Deep Sea Sea-Dweller, Iíve never compared them side-by-side. (Thereís a huge demand for both of these watches and most dealers laugh when they are asked if they have any available. At best, they put your name on a list and you wait for a call). She gestured with her finger and told me to hang on.

When she came back, she had both of them in her hands. Unfortunately they were both spoken for with deposits. Nonetheless, she let me take a look at them and even try them on.

After seeing them side-by-side, I decided right then and there that I like the Sea-Dweller 50th anniversary with red ďSea-DwellerĒ over the Deep Sea.

The manager told me she tried to contact the guy who put the deposit on the 50th anniversary Sea-Dweller, but he hasnít responded yet. She said if he doesnít respond by the end of the week, sheíll refund his deposit and it will be available.

I put a deposit down and if itís available tomorrow, itís mine. If itís not, I get the next one to come in the shop. Crossing my fingers I get a call tomorrow.

So, tell me what you liked better about the Sea-Dweller vs Deep Sea?

There is only 1 mm difference in case size.

You are absolutely correct, the diameter of Deep Sea is 44mm while the Sea-Dweller is 43mm. Not a lot of difference at 1mm.

However, to get the added depth rating, Rolex increased the overall thickness, made the crystal much thicker (6mm I believe), and made it domed rather than perfectly flat. In fact, itís quite noticeable from the profile view. Itís a small detail, but because of the dome, you have to look dead-on at the dial or the view becomes distorted. With the Submariner and the Sea-Dweller, you can view it from nearly any angle.

Either is beautiful and Iíd gladly take the first one that comes up for grabs. Given a choice though, Iíd pick the Sea-Dweller.

Someone brought in a 1st year Submariner with the box and all the paperwork to Antiques Roadshow recently. They suggested $28K+/- as the value.

While a nice return on investment Glenn it pales in comparison to this Patek ....
