Another thing I used to do is get a magazine called Popular Electronics, and I built all kinds of things from articles in that magazine with parts from RadioShack.

Me too...on all fronts. I also built a whole slew of the Radio Shack Science fair P-box kits as a kid.

These were a great idea, and very educational. It's a shame they don't still have something like this.

My first Heathkit project was the CR-1 crystal radio. I used to attach the antenna wire to the screen on my bedroom window to increase gain. I could pick up WABC in New York at night from West Palm Beach, Florida. I also built the Heathkit digital clock and digital thermometer kits, too. Lots of fun.

I still build crystal radios, it is a blast.
I also built a one tube radio, on a piece of plywood a while back, that actually worked pretty darn good. I wound my own coils, for that one.

Back in the early 1950s there were no stereo stores as we later came to know them. I think the first McIntosh dealer agreements were made in about 1957. Before that you would go to a radio distributor to buy Hi-Fi. Kits and build it yourself was the method of the day.

I went to the Lafayette store when it opened on Long Island in the early 60's, used to buy 1 and 2 resistors at a time. Built my first 15W amplifier from the schematic in the back of the RC-20 RCA tube manual and mail order parts, those were the days..

Thanks for posting those ads. I have a C4 and a matched pair of C8s for stereo and until now did not have a good handle on when they were produced. The ones I have still work very well and cost me nothing at all. The C8s were headed for a dumpster when I intercepted them and the C4 was given to me by a neighbor.

Ah yes, I remember the Lafayette Long Island stores well. Back in the 60s, there was one in Jamaica Queens and the big one in Syosset. Visiting them as a kid was a great rush-- most of the cool stuff I used to drool over in the catalogs was on display to see, touch, and hear. Unobtainium then for me.

I had a Heathkit HR10 receiver and an Ameco 15 watt transmitter I built as a kit. I could only dream of McIntosh and Marantz hi fi gear in those days. Still use the ham radio and I have my share of nostalgic ham gear in the "shack" to play with-- Drake C-Line and Collins S-Line- along with modern radios. No more Lafayette though, too bad!
