All of the 800 series UREI loudspeakers were designed for soffit mounting so placing them as their designers intended can be a challenge in most homes. The 811 was the smallest of UREI's three designs using an adaptation of Altec's 604 driver design and would, I suspect, benefit a great deal from mounting per the design intent.

I believe (but won't swear to it....my memory being what it is) that the earliest builds of the 813 (the 811's progenitor) used the Altec 604e drivers as did the somewhat later introductions of the 811 and the gigantic 815s. As you go up the numerals (811 to 813 to 815) you add additional size and woofers so of them all, I'd suspect the 811s to be the most critical in respect to proper placement and mounting to achieve most bass extension.

Bear in mind that UREI was purchased by Harman (relatively) shortly after UREI got into the studio monitor business and eventually, the 800 series UREIs were dropped from the line entirely. However, the line was very highly regarded and I for one found the UREI s to be fabulous fun to listen to, especially in the larger iterations. Giant presence and huge bass. The 811s share the family sound but don't go as deep. They were all very highly regarded by studio engineers at the time.

Why not see if you can find a UREI 6500 amplifier? That won't be easy, but they were robust beasts offering plenty of grunt and some unique features (including true independent power supplies) and should be the ideal match for your 811s. If not, any good amplifier should do the job. The UREI horn design is unique to the series and had a blue foam surround attached, visible in Ivan's first photo but not in the second. I'd think you'd want those!

A bit more:

UREI Amplifiers

Thought you might be interested in the UREI 6500 story. One of the interesting features of this amplifier was "conductor compensation" You could say this feature anticipates the interest in loudspeaker leads relative to inductance/resistance/impedance and the ensuing interest in cabling that has followed and is now in full and confusing bloom. Conductor Compensation was intended to be a stage of feedback so was an active element, not the same thing as tuning with cables (there is probably a better way to say that).

I owned a 6500 when they were current production. I used it to drive a pair of JBL 4430s among other things. It was one of my samples and I ended up selling it at some point. How do I know this? I don't have it anymore!

I did hook up the conductor compensation but don't recall resolving much difference one way or the other. This was at a time when external analog e.q. was much in favor and it's likely that my efforts to equalize the speakers in my living room confounded any benefits the circuit might have provided. Notwithstanding, the amplifier was a ballsy and solid sounding professional level gain machine. At least in my memory.

Should be a perfect era correct companion to any 800 series UREI speaker.

Same thing here. In my rush to get in ten posts, I added information to a thread that has been dormant for three years. Maybe just stick to McIntosh postings?
