I agree. My B&W Signature 800's seem to produce a "special sound". I really do prefer it to the next two generations of diamonds.

To put things in perspective, this is a Goldmund Telos 3500+ mono power amplifier. MSRP is $161,760. Of course, you'll need two. That's $323,520 for two metal boxes filled with electronic parts and pieces, and some gold trim for bling. This price doesn't begin to touch on the preamp, source components and speakers necessary before these amplifiers have any use.

A person could purchase a Jaguar F-Type SVR hard top coupe and the F-Type SVR convertible and still manage to have $67,520 change over purchasing a pair of Goldmund Telos 3500+ amplifiers.

Speaking of R&D, one has to wonder which of these two items has the greatest research and development costs and man-hours associated with the final product, including raw material costs, electronic technology, labor and assembly costs, logistics to handle and deliver the products. It leaves me scratching my head in amazement at the price tags hanging off audio equipment in relationship to other costly purchases where price seems more in line with the true value of the goods delivered.

I submit some manufacturers come out with new products to represent a new direction. Wilson Audio and my current speakers come to mind. I didn't like Monitor Audio series I speakers, because I thought they were too forward sounding. To my ears Monitor Audio series II have been tuned to sound more neutral/laid back. I submit Wilson, with their new drivers has done the same thing. Some will prefer the old version and some will prefer the new version. "We" keep getting got up with "better", when we should say "preferred"!

Marc.......I'd have a lot more change than that because I would only be interested in the F-Type SVR coupe. Between a pair of Telos 3500+ and one Jaguar F-Type SVR I would have $195,520 left over. That kind of change could buy a fabulous audio system and I'd still have the Jag in the driveway.

Another fun comparison: the Transparent Audio Magum Opus SC at 8 foot is $65k. A 2017 BMW M3 starts at $64k.

From credible sources I've heard that the Magnum Opus came about because there are customers out there that felt the normal Opus was not on par with there system pricewise (not expensive enough). So of course Transparent will happily take their money and call it "Magnum". I'm sure there are upgrades besides the name but still kind of ridiculous. I imagine people that buy this cable already have a few $65k+ cars laying around.

The assistant manager at the local Starbucks may say the same thing about some of the members systems. It's all a matter of perspective. To someone with unlimited funds what's another 100 grand here or there?

Sometimes we confuse different with better.
