CD 1 & 2

These 2 fine Canadian ladies (from Québec) play Sainte-Colombe so well.
The perfect antidote to the fear and anger in my little country...

OK but with a 5.1 source, one either loses the .1 channel or has it remixed, ad hoc, into the main L/R speakers. I use subs/BM some of the time for music depending on source and my mood but, with 5.0, it remains my choice.

The recent murder of Kholodenko's young children by his estranged wife certainly adds a layer of terrible sadness to this recording. He plays both concertos with sweeping power, and the live performances are clearly captured in excellent SACD audio. The new issue of Gramophone gives it a rave review.

This is such a powerful piece. For me, Corigliano is a perfect contemporary composer: his music is obviously "modern," but he doesn't altogether abandon melody. Superb playing and sound (it's an SACD)--more concert hall-like than Slatkin's. Bach's Chaconne might seem like an odd discmate, but the 3rd movement of the Symphony is a chaconne, so I guess it makes sense.

I never post here anymore because I never seem to play anything new to this thread, and, in fact, while I'm probably not listening to my newest or most recent recording, I guess that this 1958 superduper-disc will have to make do, as it is illustrative of my "modern" taste in classical music.

So here goes . . . I'm listening to . . . Scheherazade - a modern piece by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and played by the best orchestra ever assembled - at least in these modern times - and conducted by the ultimate genius maestro himself.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Fritz Reiner, Conductor

Absolutely gorgeous - stupendous - a best of the best recording - on VINYL - Naturally.

AN RCA LIVING STEREO RECORDING

I'd rather you keep posting. There are more great performances, composers, conductors and musicians in the past than likely to appear within the next 50 years. Many, much, most of those are on vinyl.

It is not a competition about my new is newer than yours, though there were hints of that in earlier days.

I'm a bit surprised to hear you place Reiner over Stokowski.

....

This and the companion Piano Concerto no.1 were recently re-released on vinyl. Red Stereo, Fricsay is an incredible conductor, Anda one of the very best. Pull this out of your collection and give it a spin to participate in the 20th C. ;> That's new.

Thank you so much Tim. I do love posting here - and I guess, in spite of, my 3537 previous posts in this thread, I might find one or two things among my little record collection to talk about.

So . . . . .

I'm listening to Bibi Black - Trumpet Concertos

Bibi Black - Trumpet
The Philharmonia Orchestra - Claudio Scimone, Conductor

Bibi Black is actually a friend of mine - and is/was an amazing trumpet player.

I say "was" because she gave up performing when she was married - to another very close friend of mine - who I introduced to Bibi - thus denying the world the pleasure of hearing more from Bibi's marvelous trumpet.

Bibi was a trumpet child prodigy, native of Decatur, Alabama, and performed "all over the world" with major orchestras, made a few recordings for EMI and had a very promising career - prior to her meeting "Harvey".

She played for us at one of my daughter's wedding.

A great performer and a great loss to classical music.

She also was/is a very pretty lady!

.

And, I guess that this must have been a re-release of this album . . . . Sexier cover art!

.
