I spent five hours listening to the Yggdrasil DAC this afternoon and evening. It is now silent, powered on and burning in. First impression is it needs time to mature, just as everyone has stated. Although I could clearly sense the potential of its musical nature, I also picked up on some glare in piano notes and horns. Bass seems solid and tuneful but I suspect the entire frequency range will reach a more harmonious stride once several hundred hours of burn-in has transpired under the hood. So, I will check in on the Yggy from time to time over the next three to four weeks to measure the purity of its development, keep notes on what I hear, then at approximately 500+ hours I will begin paying serious attention to its sound. Until that time I will remain patient. I'm positive there is a sleeping giant here that needs to be gently prodded awake.

Congrats, Dan! You're embarking on what I predict will be a wonderful journey with Yggy.

Your first impressions are very consistent with Schiit products, but there is more good stuff to come! I agree with Serge that Yggy will need a good 3-4 days of just being powered up to fully stabilize and start its burn-in process. Good thing is you do not need to have files streaming through it for this process to occur.

I would predict that if you checked in in a week, you'd find more "rubies in the saddlebag" to quote Shakespeare in Love, and things will just continue to get better and from there on out. Even my very first-gen D/S Bifrost needed 300-400 hours to come on full-song, and it changed considerably over that time, all very much for the better, I might add.

Again, congratulations!

BTW, the silver Yggy provides a really nice asethetic counterpoint in your audio rack!

best,
Stephen

Default Nice!

Congrats Dan.....yes indeed, this DAC looks like a beauty, and I have no doubt it's impressing already and will only get better. It's obvious from the review in The Absolute Sound that it's rocking the digital audio community.

One question (and perhaps I missed this in this thread)...is it available in black? I see some pictures of a black version, and I think I saw it mentioned somewhere too. On the Schiit website, there is are drop downs for Finish, plug type, and voltage. I was "pretending" to purchase one, but the Finish drop down doesn't yield a choice either way. The pictures I saw in black looked very nice too.

Congrats on what is no doubt going to be a very fine addition!

Hi, Pete. The answer is "sometimes". This is all Dan's "Yggy piques my interest" thread. Cheers.

Stephen.......This journey that led me to the Schiit Audio Yggdrasil DAC is entirely yours and Serge's fault. Frankly, Schiit Audio wasn't even on my radar until you two began conversations about your multibit Schiit Gungnir Gumby DAC's and headphone amplifiers. You guys piqued my interest in the company which sent me on a research frenzy where I discovered the Yggdrasil. I have complete faith that everything you and Serge said is true. Your enthusiastic endorsements of the Schiit components you own pushed me over the edge. I figured if the more modestly priced Schiit DAC's were outstanding performers then their top offering had to be something really special. I have full confidence my faith will be rewarded.

Pete.......Thank you. Yes, Schiit offers the Yggdrasil and the Gungnir DAC's in black but only by special order, and then it is a hit or miss proposition whether their metal shop is able to produce one-offs in the course of their production runs. Black can be ordered but there is no guarantee it can be delivered. I was told via email that if they could not manufacture a black Yggdrasil they would notify me that the ordered was canceled.

I originally placed a special order for the black Yggdrasil but had a change of heart after additional conversation here with Serge and others about the quality of the matte black finish. It is paint, not black anodized, so the surface texture is different than the smoother silver anodized finish. Additionally, there was no wait and possible cancellation when ordering the silver Yggdrasil. I am happy with the silver finish, and as Stephen commented above, the silver Yggy provides a really nice aesthetic counterpoint in my audio rack.

Dan, ha! Looks like we led you "astray", so to speak! . But in a good way!

I think I can speak for Serge when I say we are both confident that you will be very happy with your decision. We certainly love our Gumbys!

Stephen.......I wouldn't say you guys lead me astray, more like you pointed me in the right direction. Although I hadn't been vocal about it, I had every intention of purchasing a new DAC to mate with the Aurender N100H music server. I was pleasantly surprised to discover Schiit Audio through posts. The more I learned as I read about the company and its products the more impressed I became. Schiit's two owners are audio industry heavyweights with a long history of solid contributions to both digital and analog development. The fact that their mission is to apply that wealth of knowledge producing premium audio gear at nearly unbelievable price points is another brilliant milestone in their record book. They are causing quit a shock wave in the industry with products that outperform competitors products costing substantially more. No wonder talking Schiit has become so popular.
