Yes. Thought the same thing. Aren't the chips in the MCD550 DACs the newest in the McIntosh line-up? Even newer than the MCD1100? In fact, I don't recall seeing the MCD1100 in the current McIntosh line-up.

I don't know what chips are in the 1100 vs. the 550.
I was just joking about the two. The 1100 has been discontinued. I use mine to spin SACD's - sounds righteous. I've never had the chance to compare the 550 and 1100. Tom

Dan - do you know which chipset is in the MCD550?
Do you know if the MCD550 uses the same dual-laser arrangement as the MCD1100? I see that that the MCD550 has been upgraded from the 24-bit/192kHz of the MCD500 to the same 32-bit/192kHz as the MCD1100, along with USB input like the MCD1100.

Glenn.......I have no experience with McIntosh MCD550. Perhaps someone with that player can remove the cover and shoot a couple of photos for us to see. It is too bad that McIntosh won't simply reveal which DAC is in which player like nearly every other manufacturer does. It's not like it can't be discovered by taking a look inside.

While I think McIntosh is a bit silly by not specifying the D/A parts they use, in the case of these specific players it may not make much of a difference.
For example the differences between the ESS 9018 and ESS 9028PRO are pretty minor - some filter optimization and THD reduction. More salient questions might be: How many D/A channels are summed? Is the internal implementation fully balanced? Did the manufacturer use external I/V converters for lower noise and distortion? Did the manufacturer use their own digital filters, or did they use the on-chip ones? Did the manufacturer employ ultra low noise power supply design? How good is the jitter reduction circuitry? All those implementation related details are arguably more important than the actual DAC chip used. Tom

Tom - can you answer any of those question for the MCD550?
From McIntosh: MCD1100 uses ESS ES9018S. MCD550 uses ESS ES9016S. Both have 32bit/192kHz capability and both appear to use 4-DAC per channel. MCD1100 uses dual laser summing (not sure about the MCD550) while the MCD550 has USB input capability (not sure about the MCD1100). Any additional information is appreciated.
