Unless you have a tv on top of your rack, why not place the amp on the top shelf? Otherwise, sounds like it might be time for a new rack.

A pair of MC301's and keep the the amp next to or near the speaker and not in the rack?

Absolutely correct. One has to factor duty cycle of the program - widely accepted as 50% for heavily compressed music played back at clipping. And we audiophiles don't play heavily compressed music at clipping ... !
