Giant Scale shows are always fun. I always try to attend a few a year locally. Sad that the youth today is not nearly as interested in model aviation as they were when I got involved at 18. Without the new blood in the hobby, it will surely die out. Our local club numbers have been dwindling as the old timers pass on and no new members to speak of are joining to replace them.

It used to be straight forward, all modelers used to fall under the Academy of Model Aeronautics umbrella for insurance, assistance to the modeler clubs, you would pay the AMA membership and fly at a local club and no one bothered you. With models over 55 lb and turbine jets, it was a bit more complicated but still easy enough to find a club and get the permits to fly those.

Now with the proliferation of the drones, it all became screwy. FAA wants the modelers to register ANY model aircraft over 250 grams! That includes the drones and the model airplanes. We are now called "AVIATORS"... and get an FAA number that must be carried with you and displayed on your models! Just like full scale aircraft.... AMA is still something that all modelers need to join and pay membership as they provide insurance! Without AMA, most clubs won't let you fly.

Yes, there were approximately 180,000 AMA registered pilots in 2015. But also in the year 2015, there were 700,000 drones sold!!! Most of the buyers of drones don't even know what AMA is! They started putting rules and regs as well as AMA information in the boxes with drones now.
