Fleas become way more active when it is really hot, and will bite much more frequently. I would take him in to the vet and see if he has fleas, and get them treated. My guess is as soon as it cools down or you get the fleas treated, this behavior will stop.
Stephen,
I could be wrong, but I don"t think fleas would cause this type of behavior.

Smokey needs to be seen by a vet to rule out feline distemper, rabies and the like. And there is just the chance the cat has gone nuts. Hard as it is, Smokey may have to go.

Indoor cat only, bath once a month followed by a flea (oil?) treatment. I've not seen flea's and Yolanda and I have not been bitten. But I'm no expert He has had his distemper and rabies shot's but as most things in life I'm sure this is no guarantee. I'm going to get him into the vet ASAP, hopefully by the weekend. If we can help him we will and after speaking with my wife a few minutes ago she insists that he stays. As for me, I'll do what it takes, good or bad.

Meds don't necesarily work in cats and can actually make the situation worse. What happens is a process called disinhibition and they exhibit no fear and will really attack. Know that one for a fact since one cat was on Prozac for a while until figured out what was going on.

Don
This is a very unfortunate incident to say the least. I can only hope this is resolved and Smokey continues to stay in your loving care.

Myles,
You very possibly could be correct, however I would let my vet decide the course of action. They see different types of situations daily and they are more qualified to do what's right for Smokey & his family. Be sure you have a Vet you trust, I surely trust mine.

Another option too is to have your vet recommend a cat behaviorist. Yes, behaviorist. We worked with one for six months
