Pioneer R2R - ok?
A nice looking Pioneer R2R caught my attention the other day.
Is the Pioneer R2R reliable, good performance, etc.? I've never had a R2R. It will be a new source for me.I will go back and find out which model. Maybe get a picture. Are there questions or something I should keep an eye/ear out for? |

A Pioneer RT-707 (7" reel) is a great beginner model to taste the reel world. It is built solidly and performs majestically. Jeff at J-Corder refurbishes/rebuilds these and is well-versed in their mechanics.

Pioneer R-R
I have a Pioneer 1020L - bought it new in 1976. It has run without a hitch for almost 40 years, and still sounds great.
About 20 years ago I got a new Pioneer 707 for my father (I had a client with a stereo shop that couldn't pay his bill - so we did a little "horse-trading"). My father was not an electronics expert, but he was careful about keeping things clean, etc. About a year ago my mother asked me to hook up the 707 to her new sound system. Candidly, the sound from the 707 was atrocious! However, I did not have the time then to attempt to clean the tape heads, etc. All tape decks are very subject to "dirty" tape heads and tape path. It could be that the machine just needed a good cleaning. I would suggest having a good technician check out the machine. And - be sure the entire tape path is clean. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" to clean the tape heads. It is only 70% alcohol. the other 30% is "junque" that will mess up the tape path and cover the heads with "dirt." If you can get it, use 99% alcohol. Most drug stores do not keep it on the shelf. You have to go to the prescription desk and ask for it. If you can't get 99% alcohol, at least get 90% alcohol. Also - old tapes are very bad about shedding oxide, and gumming up the tape path. There are several discussion threads about this. Just Google "If I knew you were coming I would have baked a tape". Baking the tapes in an oven is the most common solution offered. My experience with the 707 my father owned may not be representative of all 707 machines. And - the problem may not have indicated any machine troubles - just dirty tape heads. Thanks, Jim |

Jim,
Caps on that old of a 707 would most likely need to be replaced. I bet if you opened up the deck you would see numerous caps bulging/leaking.
