Default Position and Gain, so Important!

I have experimented a lot in the last few months with the positioning and integration of my sub. (I am a bit of an obsessive tweaker) I have been astonished to discover that even moving the sub a few centimetres can have a major impact on SQ and integration. I have only a general area for positioning, so methods like the crawls test do not work for me.

I recently made a minor change, after being happy with the performance when placing the sub on a 3-inch high stand; instead of having the sub perfectly level it is firing ever so slightly up. I could immediately hear how the sub pressurises the room, with a dramatic increase in the quality of mid-bass, slam, texture, integration and probably phase with the main speakers. I had to turn down the gain (after running ARO), which is now just below the 10 O-clock position.

My advice is; don't just assume your sub is in the best position, experiment with small positional changes, front to back, side to side and up or down.

I also noticed that there is a sweet spot on my F112's gain; a very small difference in gain can result in the integration / bass being great and not just acceptable or good.

Getting the integration in a room perfect is even more important when crossing over above 50Hz as opposed to below 40Hz. I have it set at 65Hz in my system. Previously with Vivid K1 speakers, the crossover was set at 38Hz, and positioning of the sub was not that critical, bearing in mind I have a good room from a bass perspective.

I run a pair of subs crossed over at 50hz. With one in each corner I can get a lot of natural room gain helps provide very low bass without eq. Using a dayton omnimic it's easy to see nodes and play around little bit. Also adjusting levels to mains.

Thanks for the welcome!

The OmniMic works very well for those of us like to DIY builds. It's pretty darn handy.
