MQA: Why We Should Resist It
Freddie,
Thank you for the correction via a vis streaming and MQA. The article does discuss the impact of streaming but does not come out explicitly against it. I am neutral to positive on MQA. As internet speeds increase and communications costs per GB decrease the need for compression in streaming audio also decreases. One of the problems it was designed to solve doesn’t really exist for most people. Since I live in a rural area and am strictly limited by available internet bandwidth, MQA works for me. The other problem MQA solves - temporal blurring in the mastering A/D converters, is potentially much more impactful, but it gets into the pants of the D/A manufacturers and that’s where a lot of the outcry is coming from. Tom

I tend to listen to Dr Mark Waldrep who has over 30 years of experience as a sound engineer and High resolution audio over Bob Stuart who is trying to make streaming into a monopoly which will hurt everyone on the food chain. Especially the Artists. n addition, by monopolising the supply chain, it aims to cut out indie labels and self-producing/releasing artists—or at the very least it demands a tax on their creativity. A self-producing artist, or small project recording studio, now has to work through a larger MQA equipped mastering studio and bear the costs and constraints. Oh, and artists that serve music direct to fans via their own website or direct at gigs? Well, they’re cut out too: the piper has to be paid. http://aixrecords.com/contact/about_mw.html MQA :icon_thumbsdown : |

We can debate MQA here , but as Jim says our opinions are just not important.

I’m afraid I must respectfully disagree with that sentiment.

Interesting ... So you think what we debate will have an effect on the success or detriment of MQA ?

So what is the proposed method of "resisting" MQA? Not subscribing to the streaming services that offer it? Not listening to MQA songs if you are a subscriber? Limiting yourself out of principal? Have fun with that, I'm listening to whatever my mood tells me to listen to.
