Ampex ATR 700
Anyone know anything about Ampex ATR 700 machines? I've been looking for a clean Studer or Revox, and they are very hard to find. This looks to be of comparable vintage and quality. Anyone have experience with them?

Tom.......The Ampex ATR 700 was made in Japan in 1977 by Tascam. You can see it looks very much like a Teac. There were six different versions of the ATR 700 depending on the head configuration and the tape speeds. It uses a direct drive capstan motor. These machines saw use in the broadcast industry, and in home applications. The Ampex ATR 700 would be a good machine to own if the price is right, but a Revox B77 Mk2 would be better.

Thanks Dan,
If it is like the other Tascam and OTARI decks of the period, the capstan motor is not rebuildable and no longer manufactured. That's a risk. I'm keeping an eye out for a B77 MKII, but they are hard to come by. I'd REALLY like to get a STUDER A80, but most of those have been used in studios and are pretty hammered. The seller has two of the decks, I'll see what I can negotiate.

Tom.......Ask for closeup photos of the heads. If you see wear grooves, it will be an indication of many hours of hard use, and will certainly make the machines worth much less. If the head wear is deep, there will certainly be other parts that may have past their useful life as well.

Ivan.......Those Ampex 24 track decks were the birth place of many albums we still enjoy today. I would love to hear some 24 track master tapes straight from an Ampex recorder like the MM1200. It would blow us away.
