Totally agree. The ply top is under the speaker. Stained you would only see slight striping of Baltic Birch. Could do solid wood too up to you. I just did 15" legs from a nice private wood supplier called Austin Hardwoods.
You can also buy hairpin legs for furniture that you could just screw in: Quote:

It sounds like a sonic benefits can be had from doing relatively minor things like a baltic birch back panel, interior support brace, blue jeans insulation, brass screws, and not to mention the stand. Thanks for all the info on this and the Vintage Codex thread! |

Sure my pleasure. If you do the back I would recommend adding a brace similar to the stock design. Altec recommended bracing panels over 3 sq. ft to divide the panel into 2 smaller panels. Diagonally if ~square. If the aspect ratio is < 3:4 then divide the larger dimension into 2 smaller pieces. They recommend 1" x 2" brace glued and screwed on edge.
FYI. I didn't do my braces on edge but they were nice maple pieces (hard!) Also, the secret sauce is to use hide glue... Quote:

Well after selling the O/93 and going back to the Altec Flamencos I ended up getting a pair of O/96. While I don't think my Montille/Aurieges is optimal, I will stop my speaker hunt for a while...
I wonder if Line Magnetic 219, 518 or the new 508 would be better? I know I should think about Leben 600cs and higher end Shindo, but the LM line of products looks very appealing to me... |

My preferred combination with the O/96 is the Shindo Monbrison and Haut Brion, which drive the O/96 better than the Aurieges/Montille.
I do like the Leben CS600 with the O/96 as well - not quite the detail of the Shindo, but very close, great space and ease, and dynamics. |

Any news in the meantime?
CFz, have you got the chance to listen to a Shindo amp already? |

Yes, I purchased a Cortese a while back to go with the Flamencos. For the kind of music I listen to which is mostly jazz I think it's a superb amp. The whole system allowed me to connect to my music in a way I hadn't experienced before. The only other Shindo amp I've heard was the Montille EL84 with in a poorly matched system. I'd love to hear more though. |
