Inexpensive (CHEAP) pre-amp processors
While my signature says "NO TV!" I do in fact have several televisions in my house but none are set up with any components.
I have six very good (but not by audiophile HT standards) Fostex PM-2 MkII powered speakers in the house presently being used with computers and a powered AR subwoofer not presently in use in the basement that I could hook up to the television in my TV room to improve the audio experience of television. I still won't be watching many movies, but I thought, let's see what I can put together for not a lot of money. Remember I said CHEAP pre-amp processor, (NOT RECEIVER) so we're talking very low entry level. I do not need power amps because I already have powered speakers. Does anybody have suggestions? Thanks. |

Find a Lexicon MC1 . Old but sounds great, works great. An Few generations old but functional and should be found for around $500.

1) You say no receiver, but most inexpensive receivers have pre-outs. Any Yamaha, Pioneer or Denon. Which meet the preamp needs. They also have modern tech.
2) cheap? Used is great I also had an old lexicon, great preamps. $200-300. Sent using A.Aficionado |

Thank you for your recommendations. I will look into them.
I checked the inexpensive receivers and the REALLY cheap ones do not have pre-amp outs, but the ones starting in the $1000 range do. It's more than I wanted for a toy to play with, but I also want something that will work decently, so that isn't unreasonable. The idea of going used is also a good one. |

The used market has some interesting units, but they tend to lack the HDMI inputs which are really necessary today.
I'm narrowing down my search. Thanks for the advice! |

I have a question on this Lexicon
Quote:
But now I plan to get 60 inch Samsung with HDMI connections. My sources are cable, satellite, DVD, CD, and an old media server (planning on oppo 103) The lexicon works so well I was thinking of keeping it and having an HDMI switcher for those sources that require video. My questions are: 1) can the lexicon connect to the oppo? 2) would a Marantz 8801 give better sound (assuming I would only use 5 out of the 11 channels) Last edited by william13; 10-29-2014 at 03:37 PM. |
