Well, I got my SP3 up and running. Many thanks to James Tanner and Mike Pickett for their patience in answering my questions. I use a Lumagen video processor as my source switcher, since all my sources are hdmi. The Lumagen
sends out a single HDMI output to the SP3, so in effect I have only one audio source.
My next project is to resurrect my music server. I plan to use a Mac Mini with Amarra. It outputs its digital signal via USB. A few pages back I read about some problems with hi-res files going through the current USB input. There is a new Bryston unit that will change the USB signal to either AES or SpDif. Any opinions on whether I should get that unit and if so ,which input would sound better. Anybody think that its worth waiting for the upgraded USB board, whenever its ready? Finally, has anybody used the DACs in the SP3 for music, or have people used an outboard DAC and simply used the SP3 as an analog preamp?

Thanks,
David Shapiro

The main reason to buy the SP3 was it's very good reproduction of music via the internal DAC, in stereo and in surround.
So, yes, I use nearly always use the internal DAC of the SP3.

As I have understood the new USB board will be available in the near future, so I think it's good to wait and see what it will bring.

I only hope it can be installed by e.g. an importer or dealer or ...
My SP3 is now away quite a while for repair and I don't want to miss it that long again for the new USB port.

I hope that is a plug-in, user installable.

Default SP3 & Media Server

James, I recently connected a Baetis Media Server to my SP3. It's a 3 zone set up and I have the multi channel music out of the Baetis HDMI into the SP3 HDMI 5. The SP3 will not see the signal with anything connected to any HDMI input. Also, no 192K through the HDMI input. I had to set the Baetis , which uses JRiver 18, to downres the input to 96K to use the SP3. Any suggestions ? And will the architecture of the SP3 allow for 192K through HDMI ? Firmware version u2012.05e, serial # 234. Thanks

Yes the Crystal Dac in the SP3 can do 192. it may be a menu setting or the Baetis may have a compatibility issue. I use the BDP-2 and the OPPO player into the SP3 and no issues with high res.

Give Stan a call at Bryston.

Thanks Masterlu, I am fond of great music, Cape Cod, and Southern most Florida ! I got engaged at Louie's in Key West, I got a good one, she let me set up the tunes in the main room of the house, WOW ! We are off next week to Orleans for a week of Sun and Ocean, and when we get back I hope to maximize our systems potential, but I'm gonna need some help!

James, Clarification on the SP3 HDMI. My SP3 will not process 192k through the HDMI, no problem through the RCA SPDIF. And the Baetis will not be recognized if the input to my OPPO 83se is plugged in. It seems they will not handshake unless they are solo input to the SP3! Any suggestions? I have a great front end that sounds terrific through the SP3, however, the Baetis is quite the server and I hope to get maximum fidelity with them. 192k through the Baetis is outstanding, but I can't get them singing together.
