Getting old, or just spoiled?

My hearing can not withstand these rock concerts. I went to many in my lifetime, but I no longer want to go where I feel hearing protection is necessary.

And I just thought, my first live band was Van Halen in 1978. My last live band was .... Van Halen, in 2015. I wore in-ear plugs in 2015!

My last real concert was the Foo Fighters, 3rd row. I was basically in front of the tower of speakers so I definitely wore earplugs. I still enjoyed the show a lot!

Rush was the loudest I ever experienced in 1987. It was physically painful. I stuffed toilet paper in my ears

I guess that for myself I want to believe that I am getting younger, or maybe I just want to believe that I can still live in the moment. Anyway, my first real concert experience was at Arrowhead Stadium in May of 1975 in which my father took me and my older brother to see The Beach Boys and Chicago. Great show. The last show that the wife and I have seen together was the band Failure in July of 2015 for their reunion tour and release of their latest album, The Heart is a Monster, at Liberty Hall in Lawrence Kansas (see photo below). Very pleasant experience and clean show. I saw the band again in October of 2016 in Nashville Tennessee for their 20th anniversary release of their album, Fantastic Planet (see my avatar). The experience was just as pleasant as the 2015 show. I suppose that I can be deluding myself with the nostalgia of it all, or it could be just the “luck of the venue.” All the same, I have no regrets at this juncture with attending those occasional concerts and events and will continue to do so in the future (good health willing). Loudest show I have witnessed was in Dallas, 2004, Velvet Revolver in a small club! I knew from the first note I was jeopardizing my hearing. My ears rang for 2 weeks. Slash’s stack was turned to 11 that night. It was a heck of an experience seeing Duff, Slash, Matt of GnR and the late Scott Weiland up close. I have brought my custom Etymotic musicians ear plugs to every show since, just in case but they stay in my pocket unless at a club show which are few and far between. Seeing Dead & Company in less than 2 weeks, don’t anticipate needing them that night either. Smoothie King Center in New Orleans has the best sound I’ve ever experienced in an arena. Not a bad seat in the house, sonically speaking, from nose bleeds for Eric Clapton to 10th row for Roger Waters.

Great stories! I saw Ted Nugent 17 years ago and forgot earplugs. Big mistake. Left ear hasn’t been the same. Always plugging the ears but not with my new thing, the local symphony. Nice live music. Much better sounding than a rock concert.

My working at rock concerts has long gone too. Sometimes you just have too much ice cream in your bowl.
