Default Speakers are sympathetic

A few years ago when I bought my Vandersteen Quatro Wood CT speakers, my dealer tipped me off to something Richard V told him. Get other speakers out of the room if you want the best sound possible out of the speakers connected to your system.

I've come to experience that this is true. Having speakers - especially ones with large woofer cones, in the same room will have their cones moving in reaction with the sound waves impinging on them. This has the effect of muddying the bass notes in terms of incisiveness and tonality. I've found this in turn affects the overall clarity and vividness of the sound and soundstaging. So if you desire the best possible sound, Richard V is right. Get other speakers out of your listening room.

Never thought of that, makes a lot of sense though.

FYI. Linn was promoting the "Single Speaker Dem" in the 70's. Even had a window decal to go with it.

My dealer has his biggest demo room solely devoted to the Linn Klimax system.

I remember the Linn demos. Some of the best I've heard.

This fact makes it really difficult for stores to give good demos. Too many cones vibrating in response to the speakers you are trying to listen to.

I can tell the difference between when my subwoofer amp is off and when it is on. When it's on the amp has an iron grip on the driver. When it's off, the driver 'floats' and re-radiates more sound. I can also feel it with my fingers placed lightly on the subwoofer cone.

A simple fix is simply to short the inputs of the unused speakers. This doesn't eliminate the placement issues of working around lots of large reflective surfaces (enclosures) in the room but it does stop the woofer issue.
