Default Jesus Christ Superstar

For those who might be interested and not aware, a live production of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring John Legend and Sara Barreilles, is on NBC right now.

The music by Webber and Rice is terrific. The music carried the whole show--not the staging.

The performance was quite an extravaganza. (that ISN"T a compliment)

I preferred the Broadway show and the movie.

The present version was too big for a stage production and too small a stage for a movie.

I will submit that the costumes were excellent and I liked seeing Alice Cooper. In general, the voices were meh.

The audience making so much noise was a tremendous distraction. They needed "shushers" disciplining the concert-goers. The audience members should take their seats, sit down and shut up.

Gary

I will agree that the audience noise in the first half hour was a distraction then they calmed down for the most part. You did notice that it was billed as a Concert and not a Play.

As far as the voices. John Legend was much better than Ted Neely in the movie, Brandon Victor Dixon was amazing as Judas, as was Norm Lewis as Caiaphas. Sara Bareilles acquitted herself well as Mary Magdalene though few will ever reach Yvonne Elliman standards. Alice Cooper was the joke of the night.

I like Alice Cooper because he is an iconoclast.

Most movie and concert actors are chosen for their acting not their voices, so I won't quibble about that.
