Default Turntable Platform Oak vs Maple

Hi all,

Looking to build a sandbox for my VPI-HRX turntable. Which would be better for the platform, oak or maple. FYI, I already have some oak I can use but would rather go with what's best!

Thanks

Paul, as in most things audio there is no 'best'. So go with what suits your tastes IMO.

FWIW, I use maple.

Thanks Dave! Maybe I should say preferred instead of best.

Unless you just want to build a sandbox, I use the 3" Michigan Maple butcher blocks from Dawn's Depot on the auction site. They come in different sizes and run from about $60 to a little over a hundred. Dense and very heavy. Use the same thing under the BHK amp with cones from Adona.

I was told by a turntable manufacturer that he uses limestone, travertine type stone. He says the highly porous structure breaks up the harmonics. He also sold limestone slabs so he had a interest in this belief. I personally have two slabs 1 inch thick stacked with silicone in between.

Hmm, I would think that limestone might be in the same category as marble and granite and have some ringing to it. I could be wrong.

Thanks

I was told that granite is the opposite due to it's tight grain structure. The air pockets, uneven ,nonlinear grain structure helps lsolate resonance. I guess if you have still points then none of this really matters.
