Default C2300 front buttons not working

My son hit hit a button on the front of my C2300 which caused it to spontaneously turn off (I think it was near the tone bypass button). Now none of the front buttons or knobs work except for one strange behavior which I'll explain in a minute.

Luckily, the unit is still fully functional via the remote so I was able to turn it back on that way. The buttons and knobs still don't work, however.

My first thought was that something shorted in the control circuitry, however there is one strange behavior that has me hopeful something else is going on. When I turn the volume knob, the screen will change to say "VOLUME- UP" or "VOLUME- DOWN" (the volume still doesn't change). It seems strange to me that the behavior has change.

Anyone have any clue what's going on? Is there anyway to completely reset the unit?

Matt.......Try unplugging the C2300, wait 15 seconds or so, then plug it back in.

Phew... I fixed it by pushing the standby/on button and waiting about ten seconds. Not clear to me if this is factory reset, but it seems to have done something.

Now to devise a way to prevent him from continuing to play with it in the first place!

Matt: from the C2300 manual:

"Reset of Microprocessors
In the unlikely event the controls of the C2300 stop functioning,
the microprocessors can be reset by performing
the following:
1. Press and hold in the STANDBY/ON Push-button for
approximately five seconds and then release the push-button.
2. Press the STANDBY/ON Push-button, the C2300 will
resume normal operation.
Note: This can be performed with the C2300 On or in the
Standby Mode."

As to your push-button lovin' l'il guy: he sees you pushing buttons and wants to join in with Dad's fun...make him his own push button box. I also put a label that read: "Do not push" near the forbidden buttons...however that requires a bit of teaching. In the end, I don't think pushing the wrong buttons will cause any harm.

Great suggestion. Thanks! My only real fear with his button pushing is that he might crank the volume to deafening levels.

The first time he does that would be very likely to scare him considerably...and he'd be unlikely to repeat that action. However, if he really goes for the volume control, you could try giving him a demo of what can happen turning the volume control and pair the action with a definite "No, no' no", holding your hands over your ears and a shake of your head. Kids learn quickly with love.

My daughter had just learnt to crawl that day- I turned my back on her for less than 30 seconds & she crawled over & touched the HOT KT88's in my Sonic Frontiers Power 1. I was going to place the tube cage back on that night now that she was actively crawling.

She screamed & a big burn blister appeared. Trying to explain to the Medical Centre Staff what a Valve/Tube amplifier was, was daunting- but they eventually got the picture & were happy that I wasn't torturing her!

She NEVER went near my system again - once burnt, twice shy.

Cheers
Nick

Yeah, my son touched a gas fireplace and had a similar reaction (luckily sans blister). Unfortunately, the dials, buttons and gauges of the McIntosh gear seem to be too hard to resist!

I love this place. I had a bit too much to drink last night and must have hit something on the front panel. When I turned the C2300 on today, the middle display showing the input and volume wouldn't turn on. No "Tube Warmup" no nothing. I shut the unit off and powered it up again and no dice. I did a search here and found out how to do a factory reset thanks to this thread. Moral of the story: keep the booze away from you McIntosh equipment.
