Then there is the other school of thought. If you isolate the speaker, especially a larger one on a stone base, it will not excite the floor and walls as much. The subfloor and the wall studs/drywall are coupled and the walls will sing along.

I’ve always operated under the assumption that it depends on the type of floor. If you have a solid floor like a concrete slab, whether carpets or with wood overlay, anchoring the speaker with spikes has the benefit of stabilizing the speaker so that it doesn’t move around, causing blurring of the image. If, on the other hand, you have a suspended, springy floor, spiking the speaker will excite the floor and won’t keep the speaker from moving anyway. So, spike for a solid floor and isolate for a sprung floor.

Stone, cement, etc...all have their frequencies and/or bands thereof where they 'ring'. This is one reason why firms like Adona with their flavor of constrained layer damping use 'sandwiches' of granite with layers of other materials to defeat the effect and provide an equal sonic benefit to other CLD-based technology. For my money I would go with Stillpoint Ultra5s or 6s every time.

I use some 2” stepping stones from the garden center years ago (looks like rough marble but is some kind of concrete). Made a big difference with my SFGP on old pier/beam hardwoods. Less resonance, better bass, think tweeters are designed to be higher. |
