Although the Marantz is very smooth, compairing them to the 501's is apples to oranges. Both have a wonderful sound-stage and tons of power but the similarities end there. The Marantz is very detailed and tight in the bass. The 501's are less detailed and have an overall softer sound. If Mac and Krell are at opposite ends of the spectrum, the Marantz Ref is in the center.
Both are wonderful and would provide a satisfying experience in their own way.

These amps are very powerful. I love them. They do not have the soul of the McIntosh but they are really detailed and present the music in a format that is very pleasing to my ears. An added plus is the way they take control of the JBL woofers-tight & in command. Love 'em!

Congrat's on your MA9's. If you want a little more "soul" I highly recommend a Shunyata power cord, Diamondback or better. I always doubted the use of high-end powercords until I took one home, the improvement is noteworthy. All the reviews I read highly recommended replacing the stock powercord.

Forgot to mention, I strongly advise DO NOT try the SC7-S2 pre-amp, unless you are prepaired to deplete your bank account further !!! I love the C46 but there is a synergy between the MA9's and SC7-S2.

Thanks for the tips. Perhaps I will give those power cords a chance. First, I would like to change the socket to a dedicated 20 amp line-might give it more headroom? I do love these amps. They seem like they have more power than the MC402 and the details are stunning.

Sorry, I do not have PM abilities on this site.

I too wanted the 402 until I heard the MA9's. The 402's strengthes and weaknesses can be attributed to the autoformer. It makes the amp bullit-proof and contributes to its warm and romantic character. However its down side is the output impedance, about 40 ohms, which is very high compared to most S/S amps. This is why the 402 doesn't take control of your woofers like the MA9-S2. The MA9's output impedance is about 0.1 ohms, giving far greater control and output current.

I never knew that. Thanks for the explanation! Mac's do have a sweet MF & HF-it really had a time with the Arrays 14" woofer.

I wonder how the JBL's would sound with the Marantz on the bottom & Mac on top?

The only way that would work requires an external crossover to match the gain of the 402 and MA9S2.

Thanks. That was really an off the cuff suggestion. It never occured and it was not needed. The Marantz is good as is.
