Default Digital

I am thinking of replacing my wadia 121 with an esoteric k-03 or k-01 sacd player and using that DAC.

I also have a spare Mac mini and wonder whether to use that as a server. Plus my sonos.

No. Instead of the Mac mini (which is free!)

Let me know how your experience goes but I have heard good things about Olive.

And still use the Esoteric DAC?

Thanks Franklin.

But I have quite a few SACD's and no player...

Though it might be cheaper to buy HD downloads instead.

Freestone,

It sounds like you have many SACD's and CD's that you use and are interested in something like a Mac Mini to allow you to play digital files. From the reviews on the Esoteric K-03 or K-01 it sounds like this would be a great way to go. It would allow you to use it as a disc player as well as a DAC for the Mini.

There are so many options that you can go with, but the set-up you mentioned would be a fantastic one.

Yes, I have about 30 classical SACD's so not too many and about 150 CDs that I don't really care about.

I probably should forgo the expensive esoteric SACD's and just buy the albums in vinyl!

Yes, you should. Or at least purchase the HD files that are now becoming available. There really is a lot to choose from on the classical music front, and more material is being released in HD.

Still need a better DAC for HD though...
Something reassuring about just plopping in the disc versus teaching someone to access music files unless super easy.

Hey Richard-

You should look at a UX-1 too- Pretty great, and a higher end model, just the predecessor- Universal player, same mechanism-

I have one, and like it-

Probably about 4K + used on Audiogon...

You could also get a modded Oppo from the Upgrade Company, great bang for the buck, + a money back guarantee !

Just a couple thoughts...

David
